Chin implants (also known as chin augmentation, or chin enhancement surgery), are a common procedure performed to add projection and prominence to the chin. When indicated, a stronger chin will improve jawline contour, the upper neck in profile, and more importantly, bring balance and harmony to the face. Chin augmentation can be performed as a stand-alone procedure or, typically, in conjunction with rhinoplasty, face lift, or neck lift procedures. For example, rhinoplasty patients that seek a smaller nose may indeed benefit from reduction of their nasal size. However, the presence of a weak chin will cause imbalance in their profile and exaggerate their nasal size. In these select patients, a more conservative nasal surgery together with chin augmentation can provide the perfect compliment to an improved, balanced profile.
Chin implants are commonly made of Gore-Tex® or silicone. In San Antonio, both of these options are available and are chosen based on a patient’s candidacy for surgery, overall health, and their aesthetic surgery goals. Although chin implants can be placed through an incision in the mouth, Dr. Stallworth prefers placement through a small incision under the chin. Through this incision, a precisely sized pocket is created in front of the lower jawbone to accommodate a carefully selected implant whose shape and size is patient specific. Implant placement may be done under either local or general anesthesia depending on the patient’s preference and circumstances of additional surgery.
